Grimston's ancient parish register spent three months of 2007 in Virginia as part of the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first American colony.  The exhibition had three items from Britain, two from Grimston, where an early founding father of Virginia came from.  As well as the parish register (1552-1712) showing Adam Thorowgood's baptism in July 1604, the display included the 1580 Communion Cup which his father William Thorowgood secured for the parish.  Adam went to Virginia in 1621, and later took out 105 people from Lynn, naming the Lynnhaven River and the nearby city of Norfolk after his home county.

The only other item from Britain was one of the four original copies of Magna Carta, from Lincoln.  The exhibition was open at the Contemporary Arts Center, Virginia Beach,  until June 18th.  There is a photo of the exhibit in the Photo Album of this website.

If you live in Grimston and you're visiting the Virginia Beach area, William Howard can give you some contacts, and you'll be sure of a warm welcome!
